Like some others I looked at a lot of different laptops. I considered the MacBook Pro but since I don't do any heavy video editing, 3D or gaming there is little practical advantage to the Pro model. This is a fast little machine that hits a sweet spot of price, portability and performance. Build quality is nice, too. I think the black model looks a little bit better looking but I'm not paying a $140 premium for the color.(after hard drive upgrade price factored in)

I also looked at Sony and Toshiba. (Don't tell my Mac friends) because I thought I might be able to save a few hundred bucks. I could, but not for a comparable notebook. It's true that you get what you pay for. Figuring in comparable specs, weight, AV/spyware software, and sound card quality there is really no Windows based laptop for less.

At 5 pounds this is a nice and light computer. iBooks, and now I suppose, MacBooks have a good reputation for being tough enough to stand up to school kids so I don't have a problem with the plastic case. I was waiting until Apple announced an update and am glad I did. The faster processor is nice and finally Apple added a reasonable amount of RAM (2GB). The 160 GB hard drive is adequate for my needs and noticeably quicker than the 4200 RPM drive in my old laptop.

Wi-Fi reception is pretty good, as is battery life. Both are a above average but not tops for laptops. The magnetic power connector is a great touch. I've tripped over power cords before. This should simply detach without tripping me or sending the MacBook crashing to the floor.

The keyboard takes some getting used to. At first I didn't think I'd like the button like keys, but within a couple of days I found that I didn't notice. They do seem less likely to get crumbs under them than normal keys. I had a similar reaction to the glass screen. At first I was bothered by its reflectiveness, and quickly didn't see it anymore. It's there if I pay look for it but, usually just don't see it. And I like the punchier colors it displays compared to matte screens, as well as its ease of cleaning. There's no need for expensive specialty screen cleaners that the soft matte screens require.

I do have a couple of small quibbles that didn't go away. I wish the trackpad had two buttons instead of one. It took Apple 15 years to finally decide to make a right clickable mouse and they should get on the ball and add a second button to their laptops. There is some two finger tap thing you can do with the trackpad but that isn't obvious or natural for me.

My old iBook came with a RGB connector. The new MacBook doesn't, or any other video out connector. That's an add on that I had to spring for.

I'm really liking the Leopard OS. I run OS X (Tiger), Windows XP and Gentoo Linux on other computers so am used to switching between operating systems. Each has strengths and weak spots but I find the new Leopard is the one that comes closest to just getting out of my way and letting me be productive.

Like most everyone else in these forums, I'm fairly happy with my SlingBox. Very easy to set-up, although two things annoy me.

(1) That I need to purchase a proprietary Componant-to-HDMI cable from SlingMedia to get HD routed through this box. Its not an expensive cable, as HD cables go, but if I can't technically route an HDMI source, why fit the Sling with an HDMI connector? Maybe we're talking space-contraints here, since the Pro is already a bit larger than the other SlingBoxes and HDMI takes up less space than componants. Still, most people with similar set-ups will have componant cables lying around to integrate this thing into their set-up. The Componant-to-HDMI cable should really have been included with the Pro.

(2) No 802.11a\b\g\n option. Yes, you can go get your own 802.11-to-Ethernet bridge. Or you can use the (expensive) powerline networking option. Frankly, I'd much rather see a larger SlingBox with a couple extra cubic inches in the box to cram in an 802.11 chipset and an antenna hanging out the back. But I guess that would just increase the headache on SlingMedia's end, from a technical support standpoint.

That said, I still love this unit. The MAC OS X client works like a charm, despite being in Beta. On a Core Duo MacBook Pro, the OS X client is quicker than the WinXP client running on similar Core Duo Dell hardware (E1705). Very nice. Being able to customize the button interface and swap interfaces between Mac and PC (to suit what cable channels you commonly watch) is a nice touch as well.

Lacking any Pocket PC hardware, I can't tell you how well the handheld client runs (are you listening Sling? My Blackberry feels left out!) although the friend that recommended this product to me has connected to my Sling over the internet with his handheld HP.

I'm done here. Nice product, some extra features like 802.11 would be nice, not having to spend an extra 50 bucks on a proprietary HD cable would be nicer still. Despite that, I'm a happy camper.

I have heard the Slingbox advertised for several years and have often wondered what the appeal was--with other technologies like tv tuner cards and portable media players, I never saw the point. Recently, however, I purchased a 3.5G smartphone and found there was Slingbox client software available for it. The idea of watching television anywhere from my phone [with an unlimited data plan] intrigued me enough to make the relatively minor investment in a Slingbox.

After trying it, I can only say it is incredible. Having a device in my pocket that can receive television is amazing, and the fact that it is not some choppy over-the-air signal but a beautifully clear signal with access to an entire cable tv feed, on demand services, program guides, and recorded programs is mind-blowing. Even from a laptop or other client, having access to all the channels and features you normally have in your living room, no matter where you are, makes the Slingbox much more powerful than a simple tuner card. For those so motivated, it is also possible to spy on what your kids are watching when you're not home (or annoy them by changing the channel).

I purchased the Slingbox SOLO because of the built-in high-definition component input. Because I was eager to set-up the box, I initially connected it with a simple composite connection--later, I dug-out an RGB component cable and connected it that way instead, but found with the lower resolution and compression artifacts introduced by the Slingbox I didn't notice a significant difference and ended-up switching back just to eliminate some cables and to take advantage of the cable-box's ability to convert everything to the same aspect ratio to avoid having to switch the client. The video quality looks perfect on the cell phone [although I don't think anything less than 3.5G service would work well] but from a PC or laptop, the picture quality is similar to a high quality standard-definition tuner card, even when viewing a high-definition source.

Setting-up the Slingbox was absolutely simple and almost completely automatic; it does require a pc on the same network. The box was detected and video was working as soon as set-up started. A huge variety of equipment is supported, with pc client software displaying a remote that looks almost identical to the actual equipment remote. I did not have to make any adjustments to the box's IR signal timing to the cable box and it has worked flawlessly without ever missing a command.

I've finally gotten the Slingbox working reliably. My frustrations setting it up had zero to do with Sling and 100% to do with getting a reliable and fast Internet connection to my living room.

Like many homes, the living room in my condo only has a cable outlet and no place for an Internet connection.

My first foray was the Linksys WET54G wireless Ethernet Bridge. What a bridge does is bring an Internet outlet into your living room without having to drag a cable. It relies upon you already having a wifi signal in your house. What they don't tell you (but I've learned) is that it can be very tricky getting a FAST connect (required for Sling to play reliably) from your living room to another room in the house.

I think this trickiness is due to signal interruptions, etc. Also if you browse the local office stores, there is usually only one style of bridge which to me says the demand either isn't great enough or they don't work reliably enough to stock a lot of them.

When I first setup the WET54G I had a lot of trouble connecting and my best speed was maybe 200k.

Out went the WET54G and in came the WGA54G wireless gaming adapter. Different model but same concept as the bridge above. This worked ok and got my speeds up to about 400 to 600k sporadically. Enough to watch some Slingbox but I still had very frequent stalls and freezes.

As a curiousity I resorted to the tried and true "drag 40 or 50 feet of cable into the living room" and my Slingbox few. Once I was hardwired into the wireless router, my speeds flew up into the 4,500 to 5,500 k range (which btw is needed if you are going to stream this remotely).

So you once overcome the issue of getting a fast connection from the remote area, the Slingbox is a real dream.

I'm streaming wirelessly to my office and home. All you need to do to set this up is download the free sling viewer from their site, obtain a "Finder ID" (sort of like a serial number for your slingbox) and the password of the box. With those two pieces of information you an watch your TV from any fast Internet connected PC.

As an added bonus, I took my new Sprint Motorola Q cell phone/Window Mobile 5 device and loaded the remote slingplayer onto it (note: If you want to do this remotely via cell phone, at the present time Windows Mobile devices are your only option as Palm is just entering beta -- you should also have an unlimited fast data plan or you'll pay through the nose -- Sprint SERO plans are great for using this device as they start at $30 and allow unlimited EVDO fast Internet). I can reliably stream TV (once I had the fast connection) with no drop outs. This lets me get all my cable channels and completely bypass the limited offerings of the cell carriers.

The whole slingbox setup is extremely easy once you have that fast Internt connection. It's wizard driven and will automatically configure most of the options. There is also a very active slingcommunity forum which provides helpful assistance from volunteers.

A really great product. It would be absolutely great if they could build wifi into these things as the only pain I experiences was bringing fast Internet to the box.

Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount for Nüvi Series and StreetPilot I Series, C530, C550 and C580 GPS Navigators

This product is intended to be used as a portable dash mount for the nuvi series of units and the StreetPilot C5xx series.I have 2 of these, both brand new. Works very well, but the base is of a thin, fairly brittle material that doesn't appear it will withstand much upward bending of the 4 pod legs for storage before it tears . I've used one of these exact mounts, but made years ago and the underside material was much more durable. Once the bottom tears, the beads will fall out and you'll need to replace the base. But oh - Garmin *just so happens* to sell replacement bases for the mount! (minus the hook and ball joint) Truly as if they manfactured this with a built-in shortened lifespan by using low quality material for the base.The dashboard mount works well in the summer time when the heat in the car casues the suction mount to fall off of the windshield. The dashboard mount is also portable in moving it from one car to another. It can be more easily placed out of sight when car is parked in public areas where anyone may be tempted to make your Navigator their own.
It does stay secure on the dashboard when driving and does not slide around. Does take up a footprint on the dash but there is always a price to pay.
The price on Amazon was better than ordering it straight from the manufacturer.

I appreciate the Kindle Cover replacement as original was defective - holder broke and unit falls out of the cover. The replacement is ok, but a better secure cover needs to be provided with the product so I strongly recommend a redesign - you need the protection, but current cover provides minimal and over time breaks down - holder clip comes loose making cover pretty much useless except as a closed cover strapped down not in use. The answer is a better cover provided; not no cover. You can't really secure Kindle Unit in cover properly. Clip in system is not reliable. Addition of a little velcro on the back of the Kindle unit itself seems to do the trick.
